Until now, Qualcomm has released a line of processors (recently called mobile platforms), whose designation began with paired numbers: 2xx, 4xx, 6xx and 8xx. But at the MWC 2018 in Barcelona, the manufacturer announced a new series of processors – Snapdragon 700, so the tradition was broken.
The new line of processors should satisfy the needs of users who want from higher-end devices, additional features and high performance that until now were only available in the flagship with processors from the Snapdragon 800 series. SoC’s new families boast Artificial Intelligence, improved camera capabilities , high efficiency and energy efficiency.
In processors from the Snapdragon 700 series, users will be able to see the following Qualcomm authoring solutions: Qualcomm Spectra ISP, Qualcomm Kryo CPU, Qualcomm Hexagon Vector Processor i Qualcomm Adreno Visual Processing subsystem. These processors will be used in devices with a higher price range, but at the same time, more affordable for a wide range of customers.
When will we see smartphones with Snapdragon 700?
The first commercial samples will appear in interested manufacturers in the first half of 2018. When the first device with a processor / processors of the Snapdragon 700 series comes out, it already depends on the manufacturers. If you look optimistically, they can appear in 2018, but most likely, only in early 2019.
On the one hand, I’m glad that Qualcomm’s portfolio has a new family of processors. But on the other hand, I’m a little afraid that in the market – at least in the initial period – there will not be many smartphones (or tablets) with systems from this series. A good example of this is the more productive Snapdragon processors from the 600 series (we are talking about Snapdragon 660, although earlier it was the same with Snapragon 652 and 653). I mean that the first smartphones with this system will not appear soon, and in the initial period there will not be too many of them.
